Today, I’m honored to have my friend and mentor of 20 years, Len Leritz, join me for an episode of The Workplace Therapist Show. Len takes us on a deep dive into the framework of how we think about how we process the world. It’s that internal communication – the lens we look through – that can cause problems for us especially if we’re reading from old scripts and beliefs. Listen in – I know you’ll find this episode as helpful and insightful as I did!
Dive in:
03:00 Meet Len – author, friend and mentor.
07:00 What is our “internal narrative”?
09:00 The clock of internal communication:
- 12 o’clock: Constantly take in data.
- 2 o’clock: Assess and interpret that data. (Ideas are filtered through our belief system and past experiences.)
- 4 o’clock: Impact (our emotions and physical reactions).
- 8 o’clock: Needs (physical, emotional, spiritual, etc.)
- 10 o’clock: Solutions (our actions and behaviors)
14:00 When we’re aware of the process, we can improve it.
16:00 “We have all our experiences stored within us.” – Len
18:00 “The stronger the emotion, the stronger the belief seems to us.” What was true then, may not be true now. Len explains.
20:00 Why we need the adult inner voice.
22:00 “Name it” to improve the internal communications. Len says we need to “ask more questions, give fewer opinions.” Get compassionately curious, not judgmental.
26:00 Len’s Life Hack: Ask questions to get to specificity.
